Fabric and Beaded Jewelry Necklaces that You can Easily Make

I love the look of using fabric and beads. Here is a sophisticated version of the long beaded jewelry necklaces that you see everywhere. I used thin leather cord and a wispy tan and black fabric cord together. You can use anything your imagination dreams up to make beaded jewelry designs. I usually get inspired once I see the cord. After cutting the two strands into 50 inch lengths, I used pewter beads with big holes to break up the monotony of the fabric and then for an extra movement I added the pewter rings that I just tied the cord to. When you mix the flat color of the cord with a little bit of shine from the pewter, you get a very earthy bohemian type look that is oh so popular right now. I love it, too, because you can wear it as one long strand or wrap it around twice and wear it as a double choker necklace. When you want beaded jewelry necklaces without all the sparkle, this is a nice design.

Beaded Jewelry Designs for Thanksgiving!

Beaded jewelry designs can be inspired by the Thanksgiving holidays. I am in awe of the beautiful fall colors in my neighborhood as the leaves fall off the trees in shades of rust, yellow, greens and reds. What a beautiful site! I love leaves and the shape so I took some left over leaf beads and added some seed beads and came up with this beaded jewelry necklace. You can copy this project with your own beads and color scheme. Here are the materials:

3 tubes of seed beads 11/0 in bright lime green, sparkle brown, and gold

2 feet of small gold chain

3 gold split rings

5 assorted focal beads of your choice

26 or 28 gauge gold wire about 12 inches long

1 gold magnet clasp

Start with your large focal bead and string to the middle of the gold wire. Twist the wire at the top and then separate the wire and alternate twisting one wire and one bead on one side and one wire, one bead on the other. Make a wire loop at the top and add your split rings to add to the loop to attach your seed bead and chain strands.

Now enjoy your beautiful beaded jewelry designs for thanksgiving!

Jewelry Making Beads and Findings at the Bead Show

I got my list of jewelry making beads that I need and a list of what I want. It is always a compromise within my budget. I am headed off to the Rings and Things Fall show in San Mateo, CA this Saturday. It is not a big show so I like it a lot and the savings is great- 15% off of wholesale.

With the holidays approaching, I want to get a bunch of cute lampwork beads. They are great for making stretchy bracelets that my daughter can give out as gifts to her friends or teachers. They are always a hit, look great, and are easy and fast to make.

I am very cautious about buying silver because of the high prices. So I will be on the lookout for silver plated chain, headpins, and wire. I love what some other artists are doing with copper, brass, and gunmetal in their beaded jewelry designs. I hope to start doing some of my own designs using these elements.

People ask me what are "findings". That is usually a term for little metal things we use in jewelry making like, clasps, headpins, crimp beads, wire guardians, etc. These are must haves for finishing your beaded jewelry designs

Jewelry Making Instructions for Wire Lace Ribbon

Here are jewelry making instructions for wire lace ribbon. As part of your beaded jewelry designs don't forget to use unique cording. My favorite this year has been the wire lace ribbon. Above is a simple necklace I make with the following components:

Big Hole lampwork beads

sterling silver ribbon ends

sterling silver 4mm magnetic clasps

2 strands of .5 mm wire lace ribbon.

If the holes in your beads aren't big enough, you can use one strand of ribbon. Start by keeping your ribbon small. After you have strung your beads, gently fan out the ribbon for maximum romantic effect. This ribbon makes any piece look very feminine and sometimes vintage. Wire lace ribbon comes in different sizes and colors.

Some technical tips- if your bead holes are too large, make a knot before and after with the ribbon to keep them from sliding. If you aren't adept at ribbon ends, use a spot of glue for extra fold. Enjoy these jewelry making instructions for wire ribbon lace in your next beaded jewelry design.

You know you need more jewelry making beads for fall because that is the prime season before the holidays. You can get a head start on what the hot new looks are and hot colors by going to a lot of the bead manufacturers websites. For example on the Swarovski crystals site will show you the hot new designs and charms. Look for these beaded jewelry designs for Fall 2010:

 Greens, purples, fushia, and teals
Large earrings but lightweight-especially some of those new filigree leafs, and stampings
Mixed metals (copper, silver, gold) and platings (gunmetal, brass)
Fringe with seed beads, chain, cord, and thin wire
Flowers,snakes,birds,and coins, etc.

Have fun this fall incorporating all these into your beaded jewelry designs.

Jewelry Making Instructions for the Branch Wire Necklace

I made this beautiful beaded jewelry designs from jewelry making instructions from the Bead Shop years ago. Many sites will offer free or low cost documents that have jewelry making instructions on how to achieve a certain jewelry design. I have found that some of them are good and some not so good. I really like the ones from the Bead Shop. The beaded jewelry designs are beautiful and the jewelry making instructions are clear and concise. You won't have any trouble following them. All of their jewelry making instructions pdfs are on 50% off right now through October 15 so you could get the instructions to make a necklace like this for only $4. I get a lot of compliments on this style and I have modified the instructions over the years to make even more unique handmade jewelry. This one really stands out because it is lightweight, goes easily with a lot of clothes, and is different from your average department store stuff. I used sterling silver wire and real crystal bicones. Have fun with your beaded jewelry designs in different colored wires and different stones.

Sterling Silver Jewelry Making Beads at a Discount!

Now is a great time to buy your sterling silver jewelry making beads at a discount! My friends over at Rings & Things have created an opportunity for you to buy lightweight sterling silver beads, charms, ear wires and other findings are based on a cost of $16/oz for silver, while costs in the market have climbed much higher — at NY's close on Friday, October 8, silver was $23/oz!

Check out this great buy at Rings & Things.

Beaded Jewelry Designs for Men

Many artists leave out beaded jewelry designs for men, but you don't have to. I see more men buying chunky bracelets for themselves or for gifts for other men. There are definitely some key elements that you want to have in beaded jewelry for men. First of all, keep it natural and organic. No crystals or frilly stuff. When I think of a man's choker, I think of leather, suede, or rubber cords. I also think of organic jewelry making beads like bone, stainless steel, silver, gunmetal, titanium. I use large stainless steel hooks for clasps that are very simple and modern. You can't go too minimalist when designing for men. They love simple, bold and strong looking elements in their jewelry designs.

Choker lengths are popular as well as bracelets. I love the ball chains with the sterling silver dog tag around the neck. In fact, I have one myself. I have also seen that style used as a medic alert necklace that is very chic.

Rappers were the first to get men to show their bling, but even now many rap artists have switched from real diamonds to cubic zirconium in their beaded jewelry necklaces and bracelets. Most men on the street though will just look for a bracelet or necklace. So don't make your beaded jewelry designs just for women. Their are a lot of men who would love a special handmade jewelry design.

Beaded Handmade Jewelry Prices Will Be Going Up!

I know all of us that do beaded jewelry designs like to keep our prices reasonable - but have you noticed the increase in precious metals? I used to be pretty snobbish about my materials- only the best!
But with gold and silver prices going up-yikes! I just don't see my customers paying for that and my labor. I have even noticed the magazines with jewelry making instructions are showing high end designs with brass, copper, and silvertone base metal. Guess we are all cutting back in these times.
Check out this article and let me know what you think:

Beaded Jewelry Design Contest

I love a great beaded jewelry designs contest -even though I don't win. I get inspired- and fired up about a project.

This one is great because it combines my love of haute couture with beads. You have to be pretty savvy with the seed beads which are jewelry making beads that are very small. I, for one, am not. But I love the intricate patterns and beautiful colors that seed beads can do so easily. So -if you are up for a challenge to do your best beaded jewelry design with seed beads- Check it out- Haute Couture Beading Contest

Chunky Turquoise Beaded Jewelry

Beautiful crackled turquoise with chain. If it were real, it would weigh a ton and I am not into heavy beaded jewelry necklaces. But it is acrylic. I noticed some designers are mixing heavy chunky gemstones with acrylic to lighten the load and still make a fabulous statement!

Jewelry Designs for Your Demographic

My meditation center is holding a fundraiser where several artists are selling their beaded jewelry designs

. I am looking at my portfolio as to what I want to donate. One of the problems I see with artists is that they want to sell what they think they do well. That's fine and dandy- but not everyone shares the same aesthetic.

When preparing to sell your work, take some time to think about the demographic of the people who will be there. Are they older people? Families? This is important. I spend a lot of time talking to people who are looking at my work and ask questions. Do you like gemstones? Precious metals? Crystals?

This gives me insight into what people are looking for when they purchase so I will be prepared next year with the right mix of beaded jewelry designs.

Beaded Jewelry Designs Galore at the Palo Alto Arts Festival!

Wow! There were beaded jewelry designs galore at the Arts Festival in Palo Alto CA this weekend. After browsing every single booth at the festival, I kept thinking about one that really stood out. It was the jewelry designs of Carrie Walsh of Carrie Walsh Jewelry Art and Design in Silverado CA. Carrie has a wonderful modern aesthetic that is both colorful and feminine without being too fussy or girly-girl. Her signature looks include pieces of license plates mixed with precious metals (mainly sterling silver) and colorful resins. She has really inspired me to mix it up! Yes, that's right mix a different material with silver or gold. Let your imagination run wild. Get your beaded jewelry designs to stand out from the crowd like Carrie's!

Jewelry Making Beads Can Be in the Background

Jewelry making beads can be a background to lovely cord- instead of wire or stretchy string. You can use silk thread, cotton cord, suede, leather, and even rubber. If you use a pendant as a focal point, keep your jewelry making beads small in relation to the size of the pendant. You don't want to distract or compete with your focal point! So keep your jewelry making beads simple in relation to the cord and pendant.

Your First Beaded Jewelry Design Made Easy

People think making your own beaded jewelry designs is hard. It isn't! I am going to walk you through an easy project. It is a stretchy bracelet. You only need three materials:

  • stretchy string- I use beadalon elasticity cord in a .5mm thickness. This can be found at any bead or craft store.
  • beads-Use glass, metal, or gemstones; whatever your preference.
  • beads in a different shape or coordinating color. This adds an element of interest and personal style that can't be found in department stores.

Start threading the beads on the cord. You should have enough beads to cover 7 inches. Have two more inches of slack on each end in order to tie a square or a sailor knot to secure your bracelet.

That's it. Making your own beaded jewelry designs is fun!
